One of two systems of thought identified in psychology: subconscious and conscious, sometimes also called System 1 and System 2 respectively. Subconscious reactions are based on semi probabilistic associations built up through experience. Sometimes subconscious reactions lead to an immediate action, such as jumping out of the way if we hear the sound of an approaching car; at other times they are more about a feeling or gut reaction – we are aware of the reaction, but not the reasons for it. Contrast with conscious thinking.
